The Michigan Outdoor Writers Association (MOWA), in partnership with Enbridge, has selected Michigan Trout Unlimited as its recipient of the MOWA Clean Waterways Award for 2024.

“Michigan Trout Unlimited has done more to restore and enhance the coldwater fisheries of Michigan than perhaps any other organization in the state’s history. Their success is attributable to on-the-ground, in-the-water physical surveying and engineering efforts, implementation and follow-up monitoring, and collaboration with individuals, landowners, local chapters and watershed nonprofits, local governments, and state and federal agencies”, said MOWA Vice President Drew YoungeDyke.

Michigan TU’s science and restoration capacity is also used by local TU chapters throughout the state to identify, plan, and implement local watershed restoration projects. This collaboration both inspires and enables Michigan’s 19 Trout Unlimited chapters to restore watersheds in their respective backyards with greater effect, from riparian tree plantings to stabilize streambanks and cool streams, to wood placement to provide diverse in-stream habitat and reduce bank erosion, to providing the tools for citizen science monitoring.

MOWA Board Member Jeff Nedwick and Enbridge Community Engagement Advisor Lauren Brown presented the award to Chris Adams, PhD, Conservation Chair of Michigan Trout Unlimited, at the annual MOWA conference held at Baraga Lakeside Inn in Baraga, MI on May 18, 2024.

“Water is a precious resource, and we applaud the work Michigan Trout Unlimited has done to foster healthy ecosystems by cleaning and restoring our waterways to create ideal habitats for fish and other aquatic populations”, said Brown.
